Start with the constraint
Write down the exam date, format, topics, question types, and the time you can realistically study. “I will study everything” is not a plan. “I have four weeks, three evenings, and one weekend block each week for a closed-book biology exam” is a constraint set you can work with.
Reserve the final days for retrieval and repair, not for learning every topic from zero. Also leave at least one buffer block. A plan that uses every available minute is already broken when ordinary life takes an hour.
Diagnose before you schedule
List the topics and mark each one as confident, familiar but shaky, or unfamiliar. Then use a short diagnostic: a practice quiz, a blank-page explanation, or a few representative problems. The point is not to earn a score. It is to find the difference between recognizing a page and producing an answer.
Prioritize topics by a combination of exam importance and current weakness. If a high-value topic is already strong, maintenance may be enough. If a low-value topic is weak, it may not deserve the same time as a core concept.
Use retrieval and spacing
Rereading can feel fluent because the material is visible. Retrieval practice asks you to produce the answer with the page closed: flashcards, practice questions, a blank-page diagram, or teaching the concept aloud. Give every study block a job
Put one verb on each block: explain, retrieve, solve, compare, outline, or review errors. “Study chemistry” is hard to start and hard to evaluate. “Complete ten equilibrium problems and mark the error type” tells you what success looks like.
End the block with a tiny record: what you can now do, what remains unclear, and the next question to answer. This prevents the next session from beginning with a blank page.
Adapt from evidence
At the end of each week, compare your plan with evidence. Which topics improved on a closed-book test? Which errors repeat? Did the planned block fit your actual energy and schedule? Move time toward the gaps, reduce tasks that are already secure, and make the next block smaller if you repeatedly fail to start.
Do not use a missed block as a reason to double every future block. That creates a backlog and makes the plan less realistic. Reprioritize instead.
